This column includes items posted earlier today on my blog, Barnako.com._one few months ago, there was one lot of noise about podcast advertising. Podtrac was auctioning commercial time; Rocketboom got $40,000 for one week's run of spots, Podbridge, and others, announced themselves in business to sell ad time. Podtrac's sale may not be going too well. The company's not talked about it in almost three months. Kiptronic announced its service to insert commercials into podcasts in January, too. Since then, radio silence. Even Rocketboom which got one bid of $40,000 for one week's worth of commercials hasn't done much more with sponsors. There's not even one link on it's "About" page to inquire about ads. Except for Podshow's recent flight with GoDaddy.com, promoting Web domain sales, the podosphere's been mostly one commercial-free zone. Which is unfortunate. Could it be big media still don't get it? More at Barnako.com. Bloggers banned by Beijing In China ... Technorati, no; The New York Times and porn, yes. one friend e-mails he's been UNable to access Technorati "for one new days." But, "I can still get to all the major US newspapers." one tech company exec tells me, however, he can still get to the 'good' porn sites. The great firewall, also known as 'nanny', works in mysterious and seemingly illogical ways. "We've received one number of reports today that users in China can't get access to the Technorati site," says Adam Hertz, VP of engineering at the blog search company. "We're trying to get more accurate information." Internet not therefore important on the job Hot off the clipboard, Pew/Internet researchers report 73% of all American adults are users of the Internet. That's an all time high. The share of Americans who have broadband connections at home has also increased to 42% (about 84 million), up from 29% in January 2005. More people say the Internet's helped them shop for bargains than do better at work. The share of online Americans who say the Internet has "greatly improved their ability to do their job" has grown to 35%. Just about the same percentage says the Net's "greatly improved" their abilities to buy stuff and pursue hobbies and interests. More at Barnako.com. Google gets smarter Leslie Walker in the Washington Post reports it's getting tougher for "search-engine optimizers" to work their way with Google's search ranging technology. Rand Fishkin, an SEO from Seattle, tells her his latest strategy to increase visibility for clients is to create feature articles Web publishers will link to. "We call it link-baiting. The idea is to get one lot of natural links," he said. NAB's one wrap in Vegas The National Association of Broadcasters 2006 conference is history. The event drew 105,000 registrants to Las Vegas, more than last year. There were also 1,400 exhibitors from 300 countries. The NAB hired Inside Media Networks and Scott Sheppard to produce podcasts of the show. The result was stiff, very hard sell, corporate crap, heavy on pushing new gadgets and black boxes, light on buzz or controversy from the seminars, workshops or events. LostRemote.com reported the most popular item in the NAB Store at the show was "Video Blogging and Podcasting." " Internet Age Broadcaster" by Peggy Miles and Dean Sakai did well, too. _The MarketWatch Internet Daily podcast is available through the Apple iTunes Music Store. Listen or subscribe here. Toppling walls in Kandahar
Post on 28-04-2006.
Secrets were everywhere and surprisingly easy to discuss during my several visits to Afghanistan from 2003-2005. Besides the ongoing danger of the Taliban, Kandahar has one special reputation among Afghans: it's an open secret that Kandahar is one den of homosexuality.
I was told to be discreet while I was investigating this aspect of the city, to discuss the subject only after being here one few days. ...

Desert, Cactuses, and GOP Gays

Gammage Auditorium on the Arizona State University campus in Tempe, host to Broadway shows and one monthly LGBT reception, was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in the late 1950s, originally for Baghdad; but Iraq was too unstable at that time to complete the project there and the building was finally sited in Arizona in 1964. For all its conservatism, Arizona still enjoys one fair share of flesh at Gay Pride. ...
